by Barry Daniels Dobama Theatre's current production is Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, a thought-provoking drama about the first group of prisoners shipped from England to the penal colony in Australia in the late 18th century. One of the officers uses a staging of Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer as a means of “civilizing” the convicts. Dorothy Silver directs the play which enjoyed a Broadway success in the 19901991 season. Performances are April 22May 15, Thursday-Saturday at 8 pm, the first two Sundays at 7:30 pm, the last two at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $8 on Thursday and Sunday, $10 on Friday and Saturday, $3 on Sunday, April 24. For reservations telephone 932-6838.

The Karamu Performing Arts Theatre is presenting Charles Fuller's 1981 Obie Award winning drama, Zooman and the Sign. Set in a deteriorating inner city neighborhood, the play studies the effects of random violence on the inhabitants of one city block. Performances are April 22May 15 in the Arena Theatre, ThursdaySaturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 3 pm. For reservations telephone 795-7077.

The Great Lakes Theatre Festival is closing its season with a production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, directed by Gerald Freedman and featuring Hal Holbrook, Elizabeth Franz, and Steven Weber. Performances are May 5-21, Tuesday-Saturday at 8 pm, and at 1:30 pm on May 8, 11 and 15. Tickets are $19-$30 ($17 on May 5 and 6). Limited half-price QuikTix are available at the box office between 5:00 and 7:30 pm on the day of the performance. $6 student rush seats are available on the day of the performance. A symposium and film and television weekend is scheduled for May 5-8 at the Cleveland Cinematheque; call 241-5490. Tickets for Death of a Salesman can be charged at 241-6000.

Cleveland Play House auditions for next season have been announced. Equity and non-Equity auditions for the 1994-95 season will be held on Monday and Tuesday, May 9 and 10, for a variety of roles. Acting artistic director Roger Danforth is interested in seeing "the best and most promising professional actors from this area, including actors of color." To audition, prepare two contrasting pieces for a total of four minutes or less in length, then call Susan Henry for appointment, 795-7010, ext. 216.
